Juliette Karaman's Complete Methodology

The Touch Reset: four parts, in order

For people who love someone and cannot find the door back in.

By Juliette Karaman · Trauma-Informed Intimacy Expert

The Touch Reset is the complete methodology behind all of Juliette Karaman's couples work. Every offer, every resource, every piece of content routes back to it. It is the architecture that organises everything else, the Touch Languages, the Touch States, the Touch Patterns, the Stages, the Cards, the touch practices, into a sequence that actually works.

Four parts. Always in this order. The order is not incidental. Each part creates the conditions that make the next part possible. Skipping the sequence, going straight to physical touch without the communication, beginning communication without knowing your wiring, is why most attempts at rebuilding intimacy fail before they have properly started.

Part One: Meet Your Wiring

Before anything can change between two people, both people need to understand how their own body gives and receives connection. Not in the abstract. Specifically: which Touch Language is primary, which Touch Pattern the body guards with, which Touch State they are typically in by the time evening comes.

This is what the Touch Reset Quiz delivers. It maps four layers simultaneously:

Most couples in Stage One, the Quiet, resolve at Part One. Once both people can see the mismatch between their languages, the reaching adjusts. No further structure required. The map itself is the intervention.

For couples in Stage Two or Three, Part One is the foundation, not the solution. They need to see the map clearly before Parts Two, Three, and Four can be used well.

Part Two: Structured Communication

The body does not open into physical safety until words have somewhere safe to land first. This is not a psychological observation. It is a physiological one. The nervous system carries unresolved communication into physical contact. Touch offered into that residue lands on the brace, not through it.

Part Two builds the communication container before any structured physical practice begins. One prompt. Fifteen minutes. Three responses only: Thank you, Clarify that, Summarise that. No fixing. No defending. No advice.

The Intimacy and Communication Cards™ are the tool. The dyad is the practice. The time limit closes it.

What shifts in Part Two is not the content of conversations. It is their quality. The speaker stops managing what they say. The listener stops interpreting what they hear. Something that has been circling for months or years begins, slowly, to land, and the body, feeling that its words are being received rather than managed, begins to open the same way to physical contact.

Part Three: Structured Touch Dates

Once the communication container is in place, present and functioning even before it is perfect or resolved, the physical structure begins.

Time-contained. Non-sexual. Nothing required at the end. A timer that ends the practice, not the mood. Twenty to thirty minutes, weekly, building incrementally.

Week one: hands. Week two: arms and shoulders. The range expands not because it was scheduled to but because the nervous system, having experienced several sessions of the structure being safe and bounded and complete, extends the range from inside. The body decides it is safe to go further. That decision cannot be forced. It can only be made possible by the structure being trustworthy enough times that the body trusts it.

Part Four: Structured Touch Rituals

Daily. Small. Non-sexual. Two minutes is sufficient. Often less.

Part Four is the compound interest of the Touch Reset. Where Parts Two and Three are the weekly containers that do the main work of rebuilding, Part Four is what keeps the nervous system fed between those containers. Daily physical contact that is structured, consistent, and asks nothing: the ten-second hold at the door, the trace up the arm before sleep, the hand on the back in the kitchen that stays for a full breath rather than passing through.

Most couples underestimate Part Four because it looks too small. Two minutes does not feel like enough. The nervous system does not build safety from intensity. It builds safety from what it can count on every day. Consistent small is more powerful than intermittent large. The daily ritual is what makes the weekly touch date land into an already-warmed nervous system rather than a cold start.

Juliette's Ten Touch Rituals, available at feelfullyyou.com/10-touch-rituals, are the starter pack for Part Four.

The Sequence Is the Point

Meet Your Wiring → Structured Communication → Structured Touch Dates → Structured Touch Rituals.

Skipping Part One means starting the communication without knowing what each person's body actually needs, so the conversations are well-intentioned and miss. Skipping Part Two means bringing physical touch into a nervous system that is still carrying unresolved words, so the touch lands on the brace. Skipping Part Three means moving to daily rituals before the weekly practice has established the basic safety of structured physical contact, so the rituals feel effortful rather than natural.

The sequence is a spine, not a checklist. Each part is a stage of nervous system education. The education has to happen in order because each stage builds on what the previous one established.

"Intimacy doesn't come back through spontaneity. It comes back through structure. The Touch Reset is the structure: the container that makes coming back possible."

Why work with each partner alone before bringing the couple together?

Most couples work holds two people in the same room and asks them to talk through what is between them. It assumes both nervous systems can stay regulated enough to be present. In practice, the conversation in the room is almost never where the work happens. The work happens in the body, alone, before the conversation can land.

Watch what runs when two activated nervous systems sit on the same sofa. She begins to speak. Within ninety seconds his shoulders rise, his jaw sets, his breath climbs, because the filter in his brainstem has flagged her tone as danger and sent him somewhere decades old. Meanwhile her body registers his tightness. Her chest closes. She speaks faster because she can feel him going. He goes anyway. Two stress responses, feeding each other. No insight offered inside that loop will land, which is why so much couples work does not hold.

So the partners are separated for weeks of individual work first. Each one builds capacity in the body, the ability to feel a sensation without being overrun by it, to locate where a reaction actually comes from. Somatic Experiencing and EMDR give a route into the held charge that has been firing in the marriage for years. The old alarm stops needing to fire, because the body has been given a different experience.

Only then does the couple come back together, and what returns to the room is two regulated nervous systems rather than two trauma responses. The conversation that has been impossible for years takes about twenty minutes, because it has already happened in the bodies. The words no longer have to do all the work. This is the structure behind The Beginning, and the reason it moves faster than what came before is precisely how slow and separate it is at the start.
