Juliette Karaman's Diagnostic Framework

The Stages of Touch: The Quiet, The Brace, The Gone

The most important thing nobody tells couples: applying the wrong stage's solution is why most attempts at rebuilding intimacy fail.

By Juliette Karaman · Trauma-Informed Intimacy Expert

Most guidance about rebuilding intimacy treats all disconnection as the same pattern. Date nights, romantic weekends, communication exercises, sex therapy, offered as though the couple who stopped reaching for each other last month and the couple who stopped reaching for each other eight years ago have the same situation. They do not. They are in entirely different stages, and applying a Stage One solution to a Stage Three situation is one of the main reasons couples feel hopeless after trying everything.

The Stages of Touch are Juliette Karaman's diagnostic framework: the map that shows where a couple is in the arc of disconnection, and which structure meets them there. They are distinct from the Touch States (which describe where the body is moment to moment) and distinct from the Touch Patterns (which describe what the body learned to protect with). The Stages describe the climate: how long the distance has been building, and how deep it has gone.

Stage One: The Quiet

Touch is still happening, but something has gone flat. There is no dramatic rupture. Nobody is angry. The relationship looks fine from outside, and largely feels fine from inside, except for a quiet sense that something that used to be alive is no longer quite present.

Ships passing. The warmth is real. The reach is just slightly off. Two people touching each other in different languages, neither knowing the languages exist.

The most common Stage One dynamic: one person whose primary language is Emotional or Spiritual, and a partner who is expressing love through Physical or acts of service, both genuinely caring, both genuinely missing. The mismatch is not about effort or intention. It is about frequency. Two transmitters on different channels, both broadcasting, neither receiving.

What Stage One needs: The Touch Languages™ map. In Juliette's work, this is the one intervention that most frequently resolves Stage One on its own, because once both people can see the mismatch, they can adjust without needing to change anything fundamental about themselves or the relationship. The map did in one evening what years of reaching in the wrong direction could not.

Touch Reset entry: Part One only. The quiz map, the language identification, the awareness of what has been being offered and what has been needed. Often no further structure is required.

Stage Two: The Brace

This is Juliette Karaman's own territory. The half-second. Her IP.

The jaw sets before the hand arrives. The back tightens. Something in the body says oh, this again before the mind has formed a thought. The nervous system has accumulated enough data that it now anticipates, and the anticipation is the pattern, because it makes the reach land as exactly what it was braced for.

Stage Two is the most dangerous stage because it is invisible. From outside the relationship, everything looks intact. The couple still touches. They still function together. The brace is internal: a micro-contraction that neither person may be consciously aware of, but that both people feel the effect of. He reaches and something closes. She does not know why she wanted to move away. He stops reaching. Both conclude, slowly, that something fundamental has ended.

It has not. The brace is not a verdict on the relationship. It is a nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do. What it has learned is that touch in this context tends to carry weight: expectation, pressure, the possibility of disappointment, and it is protecting against that weight by tightening before the touch arrives.

The Performing Touch State lives in Stage Two. The person who goes through the motions, who is technically present and internally elsewhere, who is managing the partner's experience rather than having their own. They are not lying. They are surviving, and they are exhausted by it in a way they have never quite found words for.

What Stage Two needs: Structure before touch. The body does not open into physical safety until words have somewhere safe to land first. Structured Communication, the dyad, the Cards, comes before Structured Touch Dates. The sequence matters. Touch offered into unresolved communication lands on the brace, not through it.

Touch Reset entry: Parts One and Two first. Meet your wiring, then build the communication container. Then, once words are landing, begin the touch structure.

Stage Three: The Gone

No decision was made. Nobody chose this. The body made a quiet agreement and nobody interrupted it in time.

Stage Three is where the distance has become the relationship itself. The couple is not in conflict. Conflict would require engagement. They have moved past the effort of conflict into something quieter and more final-feeling: a coexistence that is functional, even affectionate, but in which the physical and often emotional dimension of partnership has gone completely dormant.

There is grief here, usually. Underneath the flatness or the efficiency of daily life together, there is often a grief that has never been named: for what this was, for what both people wanted it to be, for the reaching that gradually stopped because it gradually stopped being met.

Stage Three is recoverable. Juliette is clear about this, but it cannot be recovered with a map or a card deck or a weekend retreat. It needs all four parts of the Touch Reset, in sequence, with support. It needs a guide who can hold what comes up when the brace is finally asked to soften, because what is under the brace in Stage Three has usually been there a long time, and it needs a field to release into.

The Rule Nobody Tells Couples

Applying a Stage One solution to a Stage Two or Stage Three situation is what makes couples feel hopeless. They try the date night, Stage One solution, and it does not work, because they are in Stage Two and the brace precedes the date. They try the romantic weekend, Stage One solution, and come home feeling further apart than when they left, because proximity without structure intensified the distance rather than dissolving it.

Then they conclude that nothing works. That the relationship is beyond repair. That they have tried everything.

They have not tried the right thing for their stage. The solution that does not match the stage is not a failed solution. It is the wrong tool. Knowing which stage you are in is the beginning of finding the right one.

"The Stages of Touch are the climate. The Touch States are the weather. You can have a warm day in Stage Three. You can have a cold front in Stage One. The stage tells you which tools to reach for. The state tells you where to start today."
