Touch Base®: The Anchor Practice

Simple. Specific. Repeatable. It teaches the body it is safe to feel.

By Juliette Karaman · Creator of Touch Base®

Touch Base® is the practice at the centre of all Juliette Karaman's work. It is not a relaxation technique. It is not meditation. It is a body-based anchor, a way to bring the body back to the present moment through specific, intentional self-touch.

The practice is this: place your thumb against your forefinger and slowly trace every ridge. The texture of your own skin. The warmth. The small variations. You are not trying to relax. You are simply noticing what is there.

That is it, and it changes everything.

Why This Works

When the nervous system is dysregulated, anxious, shut down, bracing, overwhelmed, it has lost its anchor to the present moment. It is either running a future threat simulation or replaying a past one. The body is physically here, but the nervous system is not.

Self-touch with specific attention to sensation does something that breath work and thought-based techniques cannot always reach: it gives the nervous system a real-time signal from the body. This is here. This is now. This is safe.

The specificity matters. Not just "touch your hand." Trace the ridges. Count them. Notice the temperature. The more specific the attention, the more effectively it interrupts the threat response and anchors the system in the present.

"The nervous system cannot fully inhabit two timelines at once. When you give it a specific present-moment sensation to track, it comes back. Not all the way, not immediately, but it comes back."

Where Touch Base® Came From

Touch Base® emerged from Juliette's work with clients at the extremes of nervous system dysregulation: people in acute trauma responses, people at deathbeds, people in the middle of panic attacks. She needed something that worked when nothing else could be accessed.

It had to be portable. It had to require nothing external. It had to be so simple it could be used when the thinking mind was offline, and it had to be specific enough to actually interrupt the threat signal rather than layer on top of it.

Thumb to forefinger. Every ridge. That specificity was the key.

Touch Base® in Couples Work

In Juliette's work with couples, Touch Base® serves a different function. It becomes a shared anchor, a way for two people to arrive in the same present moment before a structured touch practice, before a difficult conversation, before intimacy.

When both partners use Touch Base® together, or even separately but simultaneously, they are doing the same thing: bringing their nervous systems into the present, rather than into the relationship's history or their fears about its future.

This is why structured touch begins here. Not with the partner. With yourself. With the body you actually have access to, the one under your own hands. From there, meeting another person becomes possible. Read more about structured touch →

The Practice, In Full

What you need

Only your hands. No props, no audio, no environment requirements. It works in a car, in a bathroom, in a hospital ward. This portability is intentional.

The practice

What to expect

Not calm. Not necessarily. Sometimes the first thing you notice when you arrive in the present moment is how much is actually here: how tight the chest is, how held the breath. That is not failure. That is arrival. The body can only begin to move what it can first feel.
