I am recording this one in the middle of a hard week in the world, and a hard week closer to home too. My own sons found themselves in conflict over differing beliefs, and watching that happen inside my own family made something clear: this is not only a world problem. It is a living-room problem, a dinner-table problem, and most of us have no tool for it beyond picking a side.
The Schism Is Not the Enemy
We are taught to see division as something to win, to be right inside, to defend. I want to offer a different frame. The schism is not the thing to fight. It is the thing to feel, all the way through, on your own side of it first, before you try to fix anything on the outside.
Grief Underneath the Argument
Underneath most of the anger I see right now, in families and in the wider world, there is grief. Grief for a closeness that used to be easier. Grief for a version of someone we loved who now feels unreachable. Grief does not get much airtime because it does not feel productive, so we skip straight to defending our position instead of feeling what is actually there.
An Exercise to Merge the Frequencies
Here is what I walk people through. Find a quiet moment and let yourself actually feel the grief, in your chest, in your throat, wherever it lives in your body. Do not rush past it. Then, without abandoning the grief, bring in the feeling of happiness, a real memory of ease with this person, and let both live in your body at the same time.
This is not about choosing one feeling over the other. It is about letting them merge, because the charge that keeps you stuck in the fight often dissolves the moment both feelings are allowed to exist together. From there, you get a bird's-eye view. You get an actual choice, instead of a reflex.
"Feel to heal. Find unity within yourself first, and you change what you bring to the argument outside."
