What Does It Actually Mean to Be Embodied?

Embodiment is not a concept you understand. It is a practice you feel. Here is the exercise I use to bring people back into their bodies in under a minute.

Embodiment gets thrown around as a word, so let me be precise about what I actually mean by it. It is not talking about our experiences. It is truly feeling them, being present in the body rather than narrating it from somewhere outside. Through somatic practice, the body holds wisdom we can access for healing and for self-awareness, but only if we actually go into it, not around it.

A One-Minute Way In

Try this with me. Bring your attention to your hands. Notice temperature, notice any movement, notice sensation. That is already embodiment, that small shift from thinking about your hands to feeling them.

Now let's use sound. Make a "vu" sound from your belly, not your throat. Feel where it vibrates. Notice what happens in your body when you let that vibration move through you rather than holding it in your chest. Sound bypasses the thinking mind in a way that talking never does.

Grounding Is Not Abstract

To ground, connect to the earth literally. Put your hands or your bare feet on solid ground. Hug a tree. Spend time near people or animals who are themselves grounded, it is contagious in both directions. Eat foods that hold you down rather than speed you up, root vegetables, lentils, the foods that ask to be chewed slowly. And notice what disrupts your nervous system, caffeine, certain people, certain scrolling, and start reducing it on purpose.

The Cross-Body Reset

Here is a movement I love because it takes fifteen seconds. Place your right hand on your left shoulder and squeeze three times. Drag that hand across your chest down to your right hip, and feel the energy travel with it, releasing down through your legs to your knees. Then repeat on the other side, left hand on right shoulder. This crosses the midline of your body, and that crossing is what brings balance and integration between the two hemispheres of your brain.

"Becoming more embodied is not a mindset shift. It changes what your relationships can actually hold."

Try these this week. Notice what shifts, in how you feel in a conversation, in how much of yourself you can actually bring into a room. I would love to hear what comes up for you.
