How to bring warmth back into a marriage that went cold

Answered by Juliette Karaman, intimacy and touch expert.

The short answer

Warmth comes back through small, repeated, structured moments of reaching that land well, not through one grand gesture. Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert in the UK, teaches protected weekly time, structured talking with cards and non-sexual touch with no destination.

One day you are standing in the kitchen with a person who shares your mortgage, and you cannot say when you last reached for each other.

Nobody shouted. Nobody left. The warmth went somewhere quietly, and the two of you were too polite to notice.

Why did my marriage go cold?

A marriage usually goes cold through a pattern of small reaches that landed wrong, not through one big event.

In all my years of working with couples, one argument has never once ended a marriage. It is the accumulation. A reach lands wrong. You go still. Your partner reads the stillness as rejection and stops reaching. You read the stopping as proof that you were right to go still.

Now neither of you is reaching at all, and nobody ever named it. By the time something is said out loud, one of you has often grieved the marriage privately for a long time already.

I know this from the inside. My own marriage ended, and my body had been carrying something that kept me slightly braced, even when I was fully there. You cannot be fully met by someone when a part of you is guarded.

Can a marriage that went cold get warm again?

Yes, and it comes back through structure, not through a grand gesture.

The usual story is that warmth should arrive by itself if you care enough. That is why the weekend away and the candlelit dinner so often leave a couple feeling emptier on the drive home. I do not teach theory. I teach what I have lived and what rebuilds a nervous system, and I want the love you still have to keep going, with both of you free to be yourselves. My former husband is still my best friend, and I want that kind of warmth for you whatever shape your marriage ends up taking.

What brings the warmth back first?

I teach three things, and they bring it back first.

  1. Protected time, once a week. Just the two of you, no phones, nothing allowed to interrupt you tuning towards each other on purpose. I call it a date morning.
  2. Fifteen minutes of structured communication. It uses our intimacy and communication cards, over 150 cards in the app, so that nobody has to find the words alone.
  3. Non-sexual touch, offered with curiosity and no destination. Week after week.

None of these asks you to feel something you do not feel yet. They ask you to turn up and let the structure carry you.

Why does touch with no sex in it matter so much?

Because touch is usually treated as either nothing or sex, and a whole nervous system sits between the two.

That nervous system holds years of safety it learned and needs to unlearn. This is the piece very few people teach.

You can begin on your own, tonight, with Touch Base. Put your thumb to your forefinger, feel the ridges, say "I am safe right now", and hold for two minutes. It is the practice I teach every client, and it gives your body a safe place to start before you offer anything to each other.

If you share a bed and never touch, I wrote about what happens in your body.

One couple who came to me had not had sex in 23 years, and three months into this structure they were making love again. That story sits on the sexless marriage page.

What if I am not ready for this yet?

Then notice that, because it is also a signal.

If something in you says "bullshit" when you read all this, that is also a signal. Your body is telling you something. Maybe you come back to it in five years and remember that someone once said it. We are not always ready, and that is allowed.

When you are, the full story is in episode 33 of The Scrumptious Woman. If you want to do this with me, I am an intimacy and touch coach in the UK, and a couples VIP day is the fastest way in.

Love that continues is possible after the marriage cools. You turn up, you reach, and you let the reach land.
