The questions people ask · For couples

We are affectionate in public but cold behind closed doors. Why?

Answered by Juliette Karaman, intimacy and touch expert.

The short answer

You are affectionate in public and shut down at home because public touch has edges and private touch does not. Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert in the UK, hears this from couples all the time: a hand held at a party goes nowhere, so the body can enjoy it, while the same hand on the sofa might be the first step of something.

Before anything begins in a dungeon, two people agree. That is where I learned about structure. What is on. What is off. What is a hard no. How long it will last.

Your living room has none of that. There is no start and no end, and no easy way to say "not tonight" without it turning into a conversation about the state of the relationship. Any reach could be nothing, or it could be everything, so your body gets ready for everything.

Why am I affectionate in public but cold at home?

Because in public the setting gives your touch edges, and at home nothing does.

At a dinner party, a hand on your knee has an end built in. Everyone is still at the table, the pudding arrives, the evening finishes. There is no way for it to go further there, so your body can enjoy it. At home, the same hand has no end built in, and your body has learned that touch there tends to come with a "what's next".

WhereWhat the setting gives youWhat your body does
A party, a street, a restaurantAn end, a full room, no way to go furtherRelaxes and enjoys it
The sofa at homeNo start, no end, no edgesPrepares for everything
Two minutes you agreed out loudA start, an end and a no that will be heardHas a chance to relax again

Does it mean the affection in public is fake?

No. The affection is real, and so is the closed door, and both can live in you at the same time.

Loving your partner and a body that stays shut can sit in the same person on the same day. I say that to couples often because it takes so much shame out of the room. What looks like coldness from the outside is usually a brace on the inside, the half second where your body tightens before you have decided anything. In public your body never gets that half second, because the setting has already answered the question.

How do I bring the feeling of public touch home?

Give the touch the same edges the setting gives it in public: a start, an end, and a no that will be heard.

  1. Start on your own. Touch Base: thumb to forefinger, feel the ridges, say "I am safe right now", and hold for two minutes.
  2. Ask out loud and agree the time. "Can I trace your face for two minutes?" is the kind of question I teach. The answer and the length are said before anything begins.
  3. Say where it is going. Tell each other: this is not going anywhere. Then notice what happens in your body when you know that.
  4. Agree the no. I use a stoplight with my clients. Red stops everything. Orange means slow down and take a breath. Green means keep going. The no gets heard the first time.

Once your body knows how long something lasts and that it can stop, it can show you what it wants. That is the same reason a hand at a party feels easy.

How long should the first agreed touch last?

Two minutes is enough to begin. The aim is a touch with no destination, so your body can learn that it ends where you said it would.

When you are ready for longer, I suggest a date morning over a date night. Plan between 45 and 90 minutes, because by the end of the evening you are tired. One of you sets up the room and tidies it, you put the music on, and you both start clean.

I teach this structure in episode 39 of The Scrumptious Woman, and I walk through Touch Base and the three stages couples move through in episode 36. If every touch at home feels like the opening move of something bigger, why touch always leads to sex goes further into it, and sleeping in the same bed and never touching covers the other end of the same pattern.

To give the question a home, I made the intimacy and communication cards, over 150 cards in the app, for the asking you do before touch. If you would like me beside you for the structure itself, that is what I do at Feel Fully You, and The Beginning is the deepest way in for couples.

Your body braced for good reasons. Patterns can change.
