You reach for him while he is stacking the dishwasher. A hand on his shoulder. You lean in, wanting a little more.
He goes still. Something in him steps back, even though his feet never move. Maybe he makes a joke. Maybe he suddenly remembers something he needs to do.
You stand there with your hand cooling on his shoulder, wondering what the fuck you just did.
That half second is where my work lives.
For years, the men and couples who came to me thought the step back meant he didn't want his partner. It almost never means that. A touch expert is someone who can read that half second, and then teach both bodies what to do with it.
What does a touch expert actually do?
A touch expert reads what a body does around touch, then builds the conditions where touch can land. With me, the work moves through five steps.
- Read the body first. Before any hand moves, I look at whether this body can receive right now.
- Give it somewhere safe to stand. Touch Base: thumb to forefinger, feel the ridges, “I am safe right now”, hold for two minutes.
- Find the way in. Every person has a Touch Pattern (Holder, Operator or Wanderer) and a Pleasure Language. The Touch Reset Quiz names both.
- Map it. The Touch Map rates each touch on each part of the body as green, orange or red, starting solo, long before a partner joins in.
- Bring it home. Structured touch dates and the Dyad give two people a container to practise in.
All of it sits inside The Touch Reset, the method I teach at Feel Fully You.
Why does a body step back from touch it wants?
The body reads the reach as a demand before the mind gets a say.
It is a reflex, older than the two people in that kitchen. Somewhere along the line he learned that a woman reaching means a test is coming, that closeness arrives with a bill. So the moment she gets warm, his system braces and makes distance, because distance feels survivable and closeness feels like exposure.
He still wants her. His body is bracing in the same half second hers does at the sink, pointed the other way. It runs both ways, too. Sometimes she is the one who steps back.
I go through the whole loop in the podcast episode Why Does He Pull Away the Moment You Get Close?, and if he is the one flinching, read My Husband Hates Being Touched, Even by Me.
What does a touch expert look for before anyone is touched?
Three things, and the read takes about ten seconds.
| What to read | Ready for touch | Not the moment |
|---|---|---|
| Warmth | Warm and loose | Cool and held |
| Weight | Settled where he is | Perched, ready to move |
| Where his attention is | In the room with you | Already somewhere else |
If he is cool, perched and gone, hold the reach and give him something with no ask inside it instead. Sit near him. Say nothing. Let his body feel you close and wanting nothing at all. You can also just ask: are you present enough for me to touch you right now?
This is exactly what I teach the men as well. Closeness with no bill attached is something most couples have never had.
Who is a touch expert in the UK?
I am Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert based in England, and I work in person and online.
If you are looking for an intimacy and touch expert in London or anywhere else in the UK, the online work reaches you wherever you are. Much of what I do is somatic. It starts with what the body is doing, then gets to the story.
I used to be a dominatrix, and I am also a tantrika. I have never hidden either. Both taught me how precisely a body opens when the edges around it are clear, and I tell that story in What a Dungeon Taught Me About Your Bedroom.
In my intensives that knowledge goes into de-armouring work, with women and with men, and into teaching men how to touch the person they love. Men can start with a men's VIP day, and couples who want a shared language for touch and talk can start with the cards.

Next time a hand cools on a shoulder in your kitchen, read the warmth, the weight and where his attention is. Then choose closeness with no bill.
