How can an intimacy coach help rebuild emotional connection in a relationship?

Answered by Juliette Karaman, intimacy and touch expert.

The short answer

An intimacy coach helps a couple rebuild emotional connection by working on the small moments where one of you reaches and the other goes still, until talking and touch feel safe enough to try again. Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert in the UK, does this with structure: protected time together, one honest conversation a week, and touch that has nowhere it has to go.

The morning I decided to leave my marriage, my body went light. I had been carrying something on my shoulders for so long that I had stopped feeling it, and in one night it was gone. My chest could take a full exhale.

Karim and I divorced over a decade ago. We are still completely a family. Friends at parties ask how we managed it, and the honest answer is that it can be taught.

The most useful thing I ever heard about emotional connection came from the counsellor we saw together, years after I first asked. He told my husband I had already climbed the mountain and was on my way down, while he was still running up behind me, trying to catch up.

I have thought about that line in almost every room I have been in with couples since. I told the whole story on the podcast, in the episode about the moment my body knew my marriage was over.

What does an intimacy coach actually do for couples?

An intimacy coach finds the small moment where connection keeps breaking, and gives two people a structure to meet each other there again. In all my years working with couples, what wears a marriage down is the accumulation: the reach that lands wrong, again and again. One argument almost never does it on its own.

Here is the shape I watch most. She goes still when a reach lands wrong. He reads the stillness as rejection and stops reaching. She reads the stopping as proof she was right to go still. Soon neither of them reaches at all, nobody has named it, and one day she is standing in the kitchen with a stranger who shares her mortgage. It runs the other way round just as often.

By the time he notices something is wrong, she has usually grieved the relationship privately, long before she says a word out loud. There is a whole page on why she goes quiet, and what that silence is protecting.

People call this intimacy coaching, intimate coaching or relationship intimacy coaching. With me it means the same practical work:

What does intimacy coaching for couples look like week to week?

It looks like three small, protected habits that rebuild what years of missed reaches wore down. Everything on this list is practice I have lived, which is how I know it rebuilds a nervous system and a relationship.

  1. A date morning, once a week. Protected time, just the two of you, no phones, nothing allowed to interrupt you tuning towards each other on purpose. Mornings, because by the end of the night you are both tired.
  2. Fifteen minutes of structured communication. One card from the Communication & Intimacy Cards, held inside the Dyad I teach, so one honest thing gets said and heard every week.
  3. Touch with no destination. Non-sexual, offered with curiosity, week after week. Very few teach this piece, because the assumption is that touch is either nothing or sex. A whole nervous system lives between those two, holding years of what it learned about safety.

Everything I teach at Feel Fully You starts with the body feeling safe first. Words land differently once it does.

Does an intimacy coach try to save every relationship?

No, and I would be wary of any coach who promised to. I am not here to save your relationship. I am best friends with my ex-husband, and I have helped tens of couples uncouple and divorce beautifully, because sometimes that is what the relationship actually needs.

Some of you will leave. Some of you will stay and it will be unrecognisable. Both are a good outcome.

There are two kinds of couple I won't take on. If I notice abuse, I name it straight away. If one person arrives certain the other is the only one to blame, the work can't begin.

I work with same-sex couples too, and with couples where menopause or erections have changed what feels possible. Those changes get worked through together, as part of the same work.

Where do you start with an intimacy coach for couples?

Start with the smallest thing you can do this week: one date morning, phones in another room, and notice what your bodies do when nothing is being asked of either of you.

If you want me holding it with you, The Beginning is my three months of intimacy coaching for couples, and it includes the Touch Map. If one full day suits you better, there is a couples VIP day.

Count the reaches that went unmet this month. That number is what another year of the same costs.
