What actually happens in relationship coaching, and how do I know if I need it?

Answered by Juliette Karaman, intimacy and touch expert.

The short answer

Relationship coaching is focused, practical work on the patterns between two people, so that talking, touch and wanting each other start to feel safe again. Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert in the UK, does relationship coaching through the body and through touch, because the loop a couple keeps running shows up in the body long before anyone finds the words for it.

Relationship coaching is focused, practical work on the patterns between two people, so that talking, touch and wanting each other start to feel safe again. I am Juliette Karaman, an intimacy and touch expert in the UK, and I do relationship coaching through the body and through touch, because the loop a couple keeps running shows up in the body long before anyone finds the words for it.

I have been working with trauma and the body for the last 10 years and experience it deeply myself. I teach The Touch Reset: finding the patterns that close the door to touch, aliveness and connection, and learning how to open it again.

What actually happens during relationship coaching?

We find the loop, we take it out of your bodies so you can both see it, and then we give you a structure to practise something new inside.

Better wording on its own rarely moves it. Most of the people I work with have already rehearsed that one sentence in the shower. When there is no container around it, the words arrive and the other body braces as if it were an ambush.

How do I know if I need relationship coaching?

You probably need it when the same loop keeps running, and trying harder inside it has stopped helping. These are the shapes I see most in couples.

It is also for couples where it is good and they want more. Wanting more is a reason all of its own.

How does relationship coaching for couples work with Juliette?

Couples relationship coaching with me starts by naming which stage of touch you are in, because the right next step depends on it.

StageWhat it looks likeWhat helps
The QuietTouch has gone flat. Life got loud and you both stopped reaching.Planned time together, such as a date morning, and structured communication.
The BraceA hand lands and a body tightens in the half second before any thought.Safety in the body first. A date night stacked on top of a brace rarely moves it.
The GoneThe roommate phase. Kind, present in the house, away from each other. The deeper work, held over time, so blame and resentment have somewhere to go.

Most couples I meet are in the second or third stage and keep reaching for the first stage's fix. More effort, more outings, more novelty. When that does nothing, look at the stage before you look at each other.

Is online relationship coaching as good as meeting in person?

Yes. I live in England and work with couples online and in person, and online relationship coaching follows the same structure.

You can begin on your own today, wherever you are. Touch Base®: thumb to forefinger, feel the ridges, say “I am safe right now”, and hold for two minutes. It is for both of you, each on your own first.

What relationship coaching programs does Juliette offer?

For couples there are two main ways to work with me, and they suit different amounts of time.

Picture the two of you a year from now, still running the same loop. Then picture the morning you both hear it as a shape and do something new with it.
